There is a reason parents in the KNOW, DO NOT put Gatorade in their kids anymore…
Sure, Gatorade has been around forever. Heck, so has Powerade for that matter, but that does not make them acceptable choices for you or your kids! Hey, I will be perfectly honest, I too grew up on Gatorade, but only because I didn’t know then, what I know now! My only suggestion to you is this…do your homework before you stick any nutritional supplement (pill, powder or liquid), into you or your family.
Let’s be honest, well placed, expensive marketing campaigns can sell just about anything, and for the past 50 years, the “rehydration” market has proved that time and again. But, have you noticed the new “versions” of these products in the past 12-24 months? Any idea why these new and “improved” versions have arisen after all these years? Could it be because the original versions have played a large role in our ever-increasing childhood obesity and diabetes rates, while having been proven to do very little in the way of rehydration and recovery! That is a resounding…YES!
Rehydrate vs Gatorade Comparison
Now, even with all that goes on in the way of education as it relates proper rehydration or the importance of proper rehydration, we still seem to be missing the boat all too often. There is still such a misconception about the causes of dehydration or how fast or slow the process actually takes place. I have seen numbers stating as much as 50% of the American population walks around daily in at least a mild state of dehydration, and this has nothing to do with exercise.
Did you know the effects of dehydration appear faster in women and children. A study performed on the effects of mild dehydration in women by Prof. Lawrence Armstrong, a nutritionist and physiologist from the University of Connecticut, suggests that women seem to be more susceptible to dehydration than men. He stated that ”mild dehydration among women can cause them to suffer from decreased consciousness”. When showing signs of just mild dehydration, weakened cognitive performance and behavioral changes where noted. “Women’s blood is thicker, their body temperature is higher, and their heart rate is also faster,” he stated as a possible explanation as to why women’s bodies are more sensitive to the side-effects of dehydration than men.
As you can see, women tend to dehydrate faster, and more often than men, due to the physiological differences! Unfortunately, most women don’t realize this or what proper hydration will do to not only their bodily functions, but their organs, hair, nails, skin, etc. (Quick side note, we recommend that every one of our female clients, exercising or not, intake one serving of Rehydrate each night before bed. The difference is noticeable within 7-10 days typically! They love us!)
And kids, could there be anything more important than to ensure our kids, especially those who participate in sports or are just naturally active, are properly hydrated?
In children, the early effects of even mild dehydration are significant for health, well-being, performance, and learning. In the long-term, they carry a higher risk of a number of health problems and disease states which could include constipation, continence problems, kidney and urinary tract infections, kidney stones, and some cancers. Severe dehydration can even be life threatening.
Not too many things from a nutritional standpoint, have greater overall and far-reaching effects on children than proper hydration. Parents, for the record, active children are better off taking in water than Gatorade or Powerade! Again, please do your homework!
To further illustrate the billions of dollars wasted on such products, take a quick gander at a study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition in 2010. This study took a direct look at the recovery effects of some popular products used for “rehydration” and “recovery”. (full study here)
“While this study confirmed the importance hydration levels play on performance and cognitive ability, rehydration with Gatorade produced an intermediate response in treadmill performance that was not significantly different from rehydration with Crystal Light. On the other hand, rehydration with Rehydrate was able to nullify the potential effects of fatigue from the dehydration, run and improve treadmill time after limited dehydration, in comparison with that obtained from Gatorade and Crystal Light.”
“Unlike other sports drinks, Rehydrate Electrolyte Replacement Drink includes antioxidants, carbohydrates, electrolytes, a powerful patented ingredient known as Sustamine™ and other nutrients that effectively promote optimal hydration and recovery. Rehydrate Drink has a 1:1 ratio of sodium and potassium, two of the most vital electrolytes that are lost when we sweat. Rehydrate Drink helps prevent cramping by providing calcium, magnesium and L-glutamine to support the contraction and relaxation phases of the muscles.”
Be advised once and for all, according to the Texas Heart Institute, feeling thirsty is not the best indicator of your body’s water needs, because thirst occurs after your body is already dehydrated. Also, your thirst is usually satisfied even before your body’s water supply is fully replaced. This means that during exercise, sports or workouts, you should drink water even if you do not feel thirsty.

Pretty funny when people begin to realize what is actually “in” most of those coolers!
