While we already know there are more than 100 proven benefits to supplemental probiotic use, increased performance is now one more!
It has already been pretty well documented that probiotics, bacteria-that live in the body, are necessary for health, specifically via their positive impact on digestion and other internal processes, but now, recent research demonstrates probiotics may very well have other valuable effects over and above aiding digestion. In fact, scientists have shown Lactobacillus, a probiotic organism, acts as an anticancer and anti-inflammatory agent, provides immune system support, and functions as a powerful antioxidant booster. Obviously, this is great news, but for those interested in their fitness or performance levels, there may be even more!
It has now been shown that probiotics can even offer defined exercise related benefits. According to a study published in Current Microbiology, researchers from Italy have very recently shown probiotics substantially prevent oxidative stress under periods of intense training. For analysis they selected 24 male cycling athletes, who underwent four weeks of intense off-season training. These athletes were split into two groups: Group A was given supplemental probiotics while Group B was given nothing. The researchers collected and analyzed blood samples both before and after supplementation.
While the researchers noted intense training, as expected, led to high levels of oxidative stress, the individuals in Group A, those given the supplemental probiotic, were actually protected from such stress. This outcome seems to have occurred due to a strong antioxidant activity exerted by the two strains of probiotics, which had a neutralizing effect on the heightened oxidative stress levels.
Although this study is limited in scope it certainly begs for more research to investigate how probiotics may positively impact exercise performance. The data presented is intriguing to say the least and shows potential benefits of keeping antioxidant levels high and oxidative stress levels low, thus ensuring adequate blood flow to working muscles.
While we are all born with a natural array of these digestive bacteria, we do increase and replenish such bacteria through food choices and supplementation.
