In simple terms, “nutrition” is nothing more than how and what your body does with the foods you eat from the time you place them in your mouth, until they are burned, in the body, and used in various processes for function and life. The slightly more detailed definition of nutrition is “the overall process of ingestion, digestion, absorption, and metabolism of food.” Still easy to understand right? Of course!
This process of nutrition allows the nutrients in the foods you eat, to be assimilated and utilized by the tissues in the body, thus maintaining your ability to be active and inevitably, to survive. As you can hopefully see, nutrition is vital!
However, there is a distinct individuality about nutrition when it comes to needs. For example, the needs of athletes or physically active individuals can differ greatly from more sedentary individuals, as it relates to such things macro and micro-nutrient requirements and caloric intake needs.
While there are general guidelines to healthy nutrition that everyone should adhere to, it is important to realize that nutritional needs can be extremely different from one person to the next.
It is extremely important for you to define nutrition as it relates to your goals, needs, and lifestyle in order to ensure the highest level of function and total wellness.
As sad as it is, most people are more likely to pay closer attention the type of fuel they put in their cars, than to the type of nutrition they put in their bodies! The is very likely to be why we are nearing a 70% obesity rate in the United States! Things must change soon!
